Ben BuckBenjamin Buck 1997-2004
Benjamin Buck was the fun loving 7 yr. old son of Ken Buck, the Athletic Trainer at West Mesquite High School. Benjamin loved going to his daddy’s games especially the basketball games, where he could roll his wheelchair all over the gym. Ben had Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bones) and was in a research study at St. Jude’s Hospital. He loved going to his T-Ball games, and had a lot of good memories of our t-ball games together. He once refused his turn at bat, because Daddy had not made it to the game. His sister said that she would push him around the bases and he told her, "go away, baseball is for boys”.   

Ben Buck Scholarship

Requirements for Scholarship Consideration:
  • Be a senior in high school
  • Must attend a high school in TSATA Region 4
  • Have worked as a student athletic trainer for at least two years
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale 
  • A letter of recommendation from your supervising athletic trainer 
  • Applicant's supervising athletic trainer must be an NTATS member prior to application deadline
  • A one page essay (no more than 500 words) on what athletic training means to you and how athletic training will help you meet your professional goals
  • You will turn in your essay and recommendation letter via the application Google form.
  • Must provide proof of enrollment to a College or University to [email protected]  before receiving your check if selected.

Eddie Lane, Cash Birdwell, Elmer Brown Scholarship

This scholarship is dedicated to those athletic trainers that not only founded NTATS but also had a significant impact on the athletic training profession.
Requirements for Scholarship Consideration:
  • ​Application must be returned by the specified date for the current year
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in an Undergraduate/Graduate Athletic Training program.
  • A maximum of 4 scholarships can be awarded to the same student (1 per year up to 4 years). Must reapply each year.
  • A minimum GPA is required to qualify for the scholarship. The GPA will be equal to 3.0, or greater according to the selected university’s standard for good academic standing (not on academic probation).
  • Students will be required to supply a copy of current transcript for verification of GPA.
  • The maximum amount of one scholarship will not exceed $1000. The minimum amount will be determined by the number of recipients in a given year.
  • Submit a 500 word essay on who or what has had the greatest impact on you.

Edwin B. Lane 
Eddie Lane has come a long way in the athletic training profession since he earned $100 for the entire school year as a student athletic trainer at Waite High School in Toledo in 1943. He went on to work at Southern Methodist University, the U.S. Army Medical Corps, North Texas State University and as the head athletic trainer for the Dallas Independent School District. He is retired but remains active.

Cash Birdwell
Cash Birdwell worked at West Point, the New York Jets and the Los Angeles Rams before settling in as head athletic trainer at Southern Methodist University. He was on the NATA board of Directors and served as vice president. Birdwell chaired the Annual Meeting in 1989 and served on the Ethics Committee. In 2005 he retired from SMU; he continues to work part-time on a contract basis.

Elmer Brown  1914 –2005
Elmer Brown, like his twin brother Delmer, was widely known in Texas. Between his first coaching job at Laredo High School in 1938 and his position at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth, he worked at 6 high schools and universities. A graduate of North Texas State, Brown landed at Texas Christian University in 1951 and worked there until his retirement.
